A Natural & Sustainable Insulation

Hemp insulation is made from the hemp plant. The raw plant material is manufactured into hemp wool, which is formed from strong and woody fibres that prove to be an excellent insulation material. Used throughout history in ropes, sails, construction and agriculture, only recently have specialists discovered the benefits of using hemp for loft insulation.

The hemp plant is fast-growing and requires very little water, making it a sustainable and renewable source of insulation. Once the lifespan of hemp insulation has come to an end, it is fully biodegradable and doesn’t release harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) unlike traditional insulation materials.

To put it simply, hemp insulation is sustainable, renewable, and fully biodegradable

Even better, hemp’s lifespan is far longer than traditional insulating materials like fibreglass, polystyrene, and mineral wool, lasting for up to 100 years. It’s guaranteed to last the lifetime of your home, making it a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative.

Perfect For Period Properties

Installing loft insulation in period properties is notoriously difficult. Older attics are often confined and have awkward angles, uneven surfaces, and ventilation issues. Hemp is not only breathable but also hygroscopic, actively regulating moisture so your loft space can enjoy natural air circulation while staying extra warm in the winter. Hemp’s flexibility also makes it easy to fit around beams, joists, and any hard-to-reach areas.

How Does Hemp Insulation Work?

Hemp is one of the most effective insulation materials out there because of its unique fibre structure, which naturally traps air and slows down the movement of heat. Just as a jumper helps you hold on to body heat, hemp insulation creates a barrier against heat loss to stabilise your indoor temperatures.

Hemp fibres are known for their hygroscopic properties,  allowing them to be excellent at regulating moisture without compromising on insulation. Because it’s breathable, installing hemp insulation prevents the buildup of condensation which is common in traditional insulation materials like fibreglass.

Even better, hemp’s density makes it an effective soundproofing material, helping to reduce noise transmission, so you can enjoy a quieter and more relaxing home.

One of the most sustainable insulation materials, hemp insulation is fully biodegradable meaning it’s not only great at keeping your home warm, but it’s also environmentally friendly and an eco-friendly choice for your loft space.

Approved Hemp Insulation Installers

You may be wondering if our service is truly trustworthy. To assuage any concerns, several organisations have glowingly approved our service. RJ Insulation is Which? and Trusted Trader Approved.

We held the PAS 2030:2019 accreditation for the installation of insulation in 2022, which also covers cross-flow ventilation. Our installation team also conformed to PAS 2035:2019 for a year. We chose not to reinstate the accreditation because ECO4 would only allow fibreglass to be installed, which isn’t biodegradable and doesn’t fit our ethos.

In short, you can trust us for your insulation installation needs. Our friendly team always encourage you to make the most informed decisions about your preferred insulation through our online questionnaire.

    FAQs

    Hemp Insulation Installation FAQs

Hemp is a much more expensive material than fibreglass to have installed in your home, however, its long-term cost savings make it a cheaper insulation option. Hemp insulation has a lifespan of up to 100 years, whereas fibreglass lasts for just 30 to 50 years, meaning it will insulate your home for twice as long (or more)! It also performs better while averting moisture build-up and allowing for natural air circulation in your loft.

If you’re concerned about the cost of hemp insulation, contact our friendly team today. We’d be happy to give you a free, no-obligation quote for your loft space.

Both hemp insulation and sheep’s wool insulation are equally great at keeping your home warm, mainly because they’re both natural insulators. Both materials work by trapping air within their fibres, creating a barrier that protects against heat loss.

They’re also both hygroscopic meaning they’re both incredibly efficient at absorbing moisture and preventing dampness. Ultimately, whether sheep’s wool or hemp insulation is better for you depends on whether you’re vegan or not.

If you’re not vegan, we recommend Sheep’s Wool, but if you are, then Hemp is the best choice for your home. If you’d like to talk through your options, contact our friendly team today.

Yes, hemp is a medium-density insulation material with low conductivity and a high thermal mass. In other words, it makes very effective insulation! It can easily retain heat, soak up moisture to prevent dampness, and is renewable, meaning your home not only stays warm but is friendly to the planet.

Hemp insulation is very efficient at keeping homes warm in winter and cool in summer. Its dense fibres trap air, creating a natural barrier against heat loss. This means less energy is needed for heating and cooling, which can lead to lower energy bills. Hemp is also moisture-resistant and breathable, making it highly effective at regulating indoor humidity for a healthier environment.

Hemp insulation can be more expensive upfront compared to some traditional insulation materials like fibreglass or mineral wool, but the long-term benefits make it worth it. Its durability and high performance can lead to hefty savings on energy bills, and its eco-friendly nature adds extra value to your home. Plus, since it can last for up to 100 years, it often pays for itself over time.
