SupaSoft Loft Insulation

SupaSoft is made of 100% recycled plastic material, namely water bottles and other single-use polyesters. Plastic waste is one of the most toxic manmade pollution sources since it takes an extremely long time to naturally break down, no matter how it is disposed of. Recycling whatever plastic we use can be a huge relief for the environment, especially our precious oceans.

At the SupaSoft factory, discarded plastic material is shipped in and processed before being broken down into smaller particles, and woven into a feathery pillow. As said, the vast majority of the polyester used comes from plastic bottles thrown in the recycling bin. Up to 12,000 water bottles can be reused to insulate a single standard-sized loft.

Scientists, manufacturers, and consumers alike have recognised the insulating properties of plastic since its invention, leading plastic to be widely applied in cooking utensils, electrical wiring and product packaging. When used as loft insulation, plastic cladding acts as a thermal barrier to absorb and redirect heat that rises throughout a home. How Does Recycled Polyester Insulation Work?

So, what makes recycled plastic loft insulation so effective? In contrast to metal, most common plastics have no ability to conduct heat. It took until the year 2000 for scientists to discover a form of polymer that could conduct heat and electricity at all! To transfer heat across a thick layer of normal plastic, it would take sustained incineration at high temperatures, by which point the plastic would melt rather than catch fire.

Insulation is the opposite of conduction. It’s the practice of reducing the transfer of heat rather than facilitating it. This is why we use it for cooking pot handles for safe handling, rather than leaving the burning hot metal exposed. On the same token, plastic’s lack of conductivity makes it perfect for keeping homes across the country warm and cosy.

We recently moved to a new property with a walk in loft plus a shallow loft at the apex of the house. The walk in loft was very draughty especially in windy weather. We could also hear every word spoken in the loft clearly in the kitchen/rooms below. We thought the SuperFOIL product would be perfect, as we’d read that many mortgage companies will not give a mortgage on foam products fitted between the joists making the property hard to sell.     SupaSoft Plastic Insulation Installation FAQs

    Each pack on SupaSoft likely contains the ground-up remnants of thousands of recycled plastic bottles, which are imported from recycling centres across the country. After the bottles arrive in the factory, they are processed and compacted. The tiny particles are finally smoothed out into fluffy insulation rolls, ready to be installed in your home and improve your comfort during the winter months. 

    On average, one full loft installation’s worth of SupaSoft insulation contains over 12,000 recycled plastic bottles – meaning that when you invest in this modern material, you’re doing your bit for both your home and the environment.

    Plastic is one of the safest insulation materials around when it comes to fire. Thanks to its organic polymer structure, plastic typically refuses to ignite, and, instead, melts. This means, that when used as insulation, it does an excellent job of preventing fire from spreading – avoiding contirbution to damage where possible.

    Our material of choice, SupaSoft recycled polyester insulation, is Class E fire safety rated, meaning it melts upon prolonged contact to fire rather than outright incinerating. As such, it poses minimal risk of spreading in the event of a blaze. It takes extreme, prolonged heating for SupaSoft to fully ignite.

    R-values are used to measure the amount of heat transferred through a surface – making them particularly useful when it comes to determining the effectiveness of different insulation types. Essentially, materials offering higher R-Values are more able to resist heat transfer – meaning it’s best to look for bigger numbers. 

    SupaSoft plastic insulation has an overall U-value of no more than 0.16W/m2K, which is the figure that we get when we add all the R-values together. 250-300mm should be the ideal thickness of insulation to reach this specified U-value level. SupaSoft can be stacked on top of a different kind of insulation to achieve this.

    At RJ Insulation, we aim to install recycled plastic insulation to your exact requirements – meaning you shouldn’t have to make any DIY alterations. With this being said, if you have to cut into your SupaSoft insulation a little further down the line, whether it’s to make room for more cladding or you just have an eye for destruction, you can by taking a scalloped kitchen knife or an otherwise especially sharp blade and saw into it for a clean slice. Alternatively, you can simply tear into it with your bare hands if you don’t have the time! The soft, woven structure of this material makes it relatively easy to cut into shape.

    Unfortunately, some would say not nearly enough. Only 9% of the plastic we use gets fully recycled. Instead, the majority of plastic ends up in landfills, the ocean or our atmosphere, where it can remain for hundreds of years, destroying the natural ecosystem. Luckily, SupaSoft receives large quantities of old plastic water bottles and makes the most of this recycled material by turning it into a lasting source of insulation.
